Located in between the cities of Sarasota and Venice, the town of Nokomis is well-known for its beautiful seashore, fishing, surfing, shopping and dining options, and Nokomis Beach. Nokomis Beach is Sarasota County’s oldest public beach and is one of the more scenic beaches around. Stretching 14 miles with white sand and clear blue waters, Nokomis Beach is a favorite destination in Florida. Discover below all there is to do for a day of fun in the sun at Nokomis Beach, Fl.
Visit the Nokomis Beach Plaza
The Nokomis Beach Plaza was built in the 1950s and is what they call a “Sarasota School of Architecture preservation success story.” Built by the architect, Jack West, of the famous Sarasota School of Architecture, the structure is a historic landmark. It was recently renovated to include a boardwalk, canoe/kayak launch, boat ramp, educational panels, picnic shelters, and more.
Shark tooth hunting
While there are typically fewer shark teeth found along this stretch of sand, unlike other beaches such as Caspersen Beach, treasure hunters should still keep their eye out!
Surfing
The North Jetty at Nokomis Beach is said to be the best surf spot on Florida’s West Coast. Because of the jetties, surfing here is some of the best in the state, especially when a Gulf storm is coming. Join in on the fun or enjoy watching from ashore as surfers attempt to ride the wave.
Dine at Pop’s Sunset Grill
For water views and fresh local fare in an Old Florida atmosphere, dine in at Pop’s Sunset Grill. Located on the Intercoastal, you can sample the catch of the day right off the boat as you enjoy coastal views and a beach cocktail.
Sunset on the North Jetty
Complete your visit to Nokomis Beach with sunset at the North Jetty. A paved strip of rock protrudes out into the Gulf, giving visitors the chance to watch the boats pass through the channel via the Intercoastal Waterway. Plus, enjoy fishing, surfing, wildlife viewing, and end the day with one of the best seats in the house for a coastal sunset.
Go fishing at North Jetty
The sunsets at North Jetty are spectacular but most come for the opportunity to fish. From the long rock-lined jetty, anglers can reel in a variety of fish including, snapper, flounder, tarpon, and snook. The North Jetty Fish Camp sells bait, tackle, and snacks (cash only).
Note: A valid fishing license is required to fish from the North Jetty.
