Who says mermaids don’t exist? “FantaSea Venice” provest that they do with its is public art project launched by the community and local organizations to create one-of-a-kind designs for 22 fiberglass mermaids and 30 fiberglass seahorses. About the mermaids of Venice, FL
These unique sculptures are adorned and created by the most talented artists in the region. Local businesses sponsored individual mermaids and seahorses and worked with artists to create these unique pieces. Each sponsor and artist’s name is placed at the base of each sculpture, along with the sculpture’s individual name.
The sculptures are found in various locations around Venice, Florida on city streets, parks, lobbies, businesses, etc. until April of 2023. They will eventually be auctioned off to raise money for the Venice Art Center.
Notable pieces to see
- U. Gogh Girl – Created by artist Mary Moscatelli, this sculpture is inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night. A tribute to the impressionist’s work, this mermaid is found at E. Venice Ave. between Nokomis & N. Tamiami Tr.
- Gifts from the Sea – Adorned in thousands of seashells, much like what you would find at the beach, the Gifts from the Sea mermaid captures more of the natural sense around her. With other features like pieces of coral and starfish, artist Barry Zahnd has created something truly special. Its location is at Whittaker & Associates CPAs, 304 Venice Ave.
- Diana – Imagined by artist Chau Mal, Diana possesses qualities and details of Super Woman. Complete with the logo on the starfish and flowing blue hair, don’t mess with this powerful mermaid! You can find Diana along the S. Tamiami Trail, just north of Milan Ave. E.
Where to see the mermaids
Explore and see all of them using the map with a full list of the locations of the sculptures. The majority of the mermaids and seahorses can be seen simply strolling down Venice Ave., between Harbor Drive N. and S. Tamiami Trail. Other areas to spot the mermaids of Venice, FL are at Sharky’s Pier, the Venice Beach Pavilion, and at the Venice Art Center.
